Le ville venete di Andrea Palladio

Abstract

L'«utile» e il «Commodo». « Le case della città sono veramente al Gentiluomo di molto splendore e comodità [ ... ]:ma non minore utilità e consolazione caverà [otterrà] forse dalle case di Villa, dove il resto del tempo si passerà in vedere e ornare le sue possessioni, e con industria, e arte della Agricoltura accrescer la facultà [ricchezza]: dove anco per lo esercizio [ ... ] il corpo più agevolmente conserverà la sua sanità e robustezza, e dove finalmente l'animo stanco [ ... ] prenderà molto rista uro e consolazione, e quietamente potrà attendere agli studi delle lettere e alla contemplazione». Così Andrea Palladio, nei suoi Quattro libri dell'Architettura (1570), chiarisce la duplice funzione delle celebri ville venete da lui progettate nel corso di circa quarant'anni (a partire dal 1530): si tratta dell'« utile», cioè la possibilità eia parte del nobile di tenere sotto controllo la produzione agricola dei suoi possedimenti, e del «commodo», ovvero l'occasione per praticare una vita sana, facendo esercizio, riposandosi e dedicandosi allo studio.
