I mitrei di Ostia antica

I mitrei di Ostia antica

Abstract

The Mithraic religion manifested itself in the Roman world with typically Mediterranean characteristics, despite the evident eastern origin of the cult of the god Mithras. The Mithraic mysteries are not to be regarded as a mere development of ancestral beliefs, but rather as a precipitous elaboration in an environmental context determined by Roman expansion. In this sense, the city of Ostia provides fundamental archaeological evidence for the high number of mithraea found, distributed throughout the city's quarters known to date, and for the numerous epigraphic attestations, useful for better defining the historical-social traits of the various communities of worshippers. Almost seventy years after Giovanni Becatti's corpus, the publication of this volume, which avails itself of a special campaign of documentation and surveys, allows us to reread and redefine the complexity of these special meeting places in the sign of the "vetusta religio" in the first colony of Rome.
