Abstract

The set of art interventions that David Tremlett, a master of dominated and geometric colour, has carried out since 1999 on small, rural churches in Italy and Switzerland, brings life to a spontaneous system of sacred refuges in which the action of architectural renewal is intense enough to modify not just the building on which it acts, but also the landscapes into which these small objects are inserted, whether they are the orderly rows of vineyards of the Langhe or the wooded, evergreen Swiss mountains. The restoration work in no case entailed liturgical adjustments or modifications in the architectural conformation, since the small buildings’ spatial dimension, type, and archetypical local references meet the functional needs of inhabiting the sacred in places extraneous to urban rites and times, while the action of the Wall Drawing is used with Renaissance-type but iconoclastic spirit, in which ethics and aesthetics join in elevating transcendence to meet the other needs of the places of the spirit.
