Sacro contemporaneo

Abstract

Sacred Contemporary The issue number 166 of Rassegna di architettura e urbanistica, is dedicated to how architecture interprets current needs and desires for sacredness, often highly individualised and detached from religious connotations. The essays in this issue explore the territory of the “contemporary sacred” from an open perspective. They look at both ‘religious’ architecture and other ‘spiritual’ spaces (silent constrictions, unexpected intimate spaces, historic and natural environments), capable of offering respite from our restless consciences, bringing us into contact with our roots, preserving the memory of significant events, guiding us toward the beyond, the unknown and, for believers, the divine. The intention is to initiate a new dialogue about how the art of building spaces and relations can help redeem the loss in the meaning of the ‘sacred’ as a shared value, a factor in the persistence of a place and a community, an irrenouncable dimension of humanity.
