There are very few countries (including Belgium) that, in the face of the rapid increase in cremation demands in Europe, have invested significantly in the creation of new spaces for the cremation, ritual which began at the dawn of human history. Like all rituals, the crematorium rite unfolds within a spatial apparatus made up of thresholds, diaphragms, intermediate spaces that record and amplify the chain of events. The essay presents a some contemporary crematoria buildings in order to bring out the multiple compositional principles guiding the design of spaces that, however you want to put it, belong to the category of sacred forms.
