The essay weighs up the inflectional categories of the verb in the most ancient IE languages, so as to evaluate if the functional class of time is really older than aspect. A consistent set of evidences - even very solid - requires to tag the grammatical expression of time as later and secondary in comparison with the expression of aspect, which is - together with Aktionsart - the most productive functional class in the most archaic languages and presumably in PIE.
