Le due ‘prospettive’ di Vitruvio

Abstract

In his famous treatise Vitruvius describes the "representation methods" used by Roman architects: ichnographia, orthographia and scaenographia. The third definition has been repeatedly interpreted, but is chiefly considered to be what we currently call perspective. There is another hypothesis which we share in this contribution; it assigns two possible definitions to this term depending on how it is used: in Book I, 2, 2 Vitruvius could refer to "long range perspective", while in Book VII, praef. 11 the reference could be to "close range perspective".
