Sempre più frequentemente ci troviamo a confrontarci con l’introduzione e la diffusione di categorie interpretative innovative che semplicemente danno nome alla presenza di fenomeni complessi che attraversano la città e l’ambiente urbano e che l’urbanistica e la pianificazione, nella loro declinazione radicata nella cultura della modernità, non hanno saputo per tanto tempo affrontare. O, meglio, ormai da molto tempo se ne conosce l’esistenza (pensiamo, ad esempio, a tutta la questione ambientale), ma si è fatto sempre tendenzialmente ricorso ad approcci consolidati, tipici della pianificazione fisica tradizionale, che mal si adattano a questi problemi, in particolare ad esempio a quelli ambientali. Molte sono le retoriche che si annidano nell’uso di categorie interpretative innovative e queste bisogna avere ben presenti se vogliamo che effettivamente siano incisive e ci parlino di una reale innovazione nel modo di pensare l’urbanistica. In particolare, bisogna rivolgere una specifica attenzione a quali siano i soggetti sociali protagonisti di questa innovazione e dei processi che vengono attivati. Il protagonismo sociale, che sta effettivamente realizzando oggi questi approcci nel concreto della città, costituisce il vero potenziale di cambiamento e innovazione.

More and more frequently, we find ourselves dealing with the introduction and diffusion of innovative interpretative categories that simply give name to the presence of complex phenomena that cross the city and the urban environment and that planning has not been able to deal with for so long. Or, better, for a long time now we know its existence (let's think, for example, of the whole environmental question), but we have always tended to resort to consolidated approaches, typical of traditional physical planning, which are ill-suited to these problems, in particular for example environmental problems. There are many rhetorics in the use of innovative interpretative categories and these must be well present if we want them to be effective and speak to us of a real innovation in the way of thinking about urban planning. In particular, specific attention must be given to which social subjects are the protagonists of this innovation and of the processes that are activated. The social protagonism, which is actually realizing these approaches today in the concrete of the city, constitutes the true potential for change and innovation.
