The Poetry of the Sixtiers and Europe: Between Culture and Politics

Abstract

The article focuses on the powerful phenomenon of the Ukrainian cultural revival thanks to the literature of the 1960s. In the aftermath of Modernism of the 1920s dubbed “Executed Renaissance” and the thirty years of stalinist terror, this new generation of writers represents the most active core of Ukraine's dissident movement of the time, and through new philosophical concepts advances a radical cultural modernisation and linguistic experimentalism while challenging the static monotony of Socialist Realism. With its more eminent representatives (such as Vasyl' Stus, Lina Kostenko, Ivan Drach, Mykola Vinhranovs'ky, Vasyl' Symonenko), poetry has a key-role in promoting the vision of Ukraine as a culture that is historically part of Europe through topics and themes that evoke the philosophical currents in vogue in Europe at the time. As a matter of fact, with Camus at the centre of the new literary sensitivity, French existentialism becomes a key-reference point, especially in relation to the formation of the concept of individual freedom and the “people” by Ukrainian poets, but also their interpretation of the role of the intellectual in his “absurd rebellion” against old and new totalitarianisms and in his engagement as Sisyphus for the moral redemption of men.
