Nel quadro di una lettura sentimentalista dell’etica della cura (da quella di A. Baier a quella di M. Slote), lettura che insiste sulla natura sentimentale e riflessiva della morale e indica nella simpatia e nell’immaginazione i pilastri del sentimento morale, ma anche a partire da alcune riflessioni sviluppate nella recente letteratura femminista e post-femminista riguardo alla difficoltà di dare conto di sé e degli altri (come ad es. in J. Butler), di vedere i bisogni propri e altrui (o di avere una voce per esprimerli), riflessioni di cui trovo una eco nella produzione recente di C. Gilligan (ad es. in La virtù della resistenza), nell’intervento vorrei provare a dar conto di alcune riflessioni critiche e ad articolare alcune linee di sviluppo nella formulazione di un’etica della cura. In particolare, pur mantenendo un riferimento forte a simpatia e immaginazione, vorrei provare a interrogarmi intorno al tipo di lavoro che l’immaginazione svolge e a indicare il ruolo positivo svolto da un’ulteriore istanza che proverò a caratterizzare nei termini della consapevolezza dei limiti del proprio immaginare o sentire, di un senso del limite o di un’istanza critica. Un’istanza che non va necessariamente pensata come il frutto di un intervento della ragione o dell’intelletto, ma che può essere invece considerata come il frutto di esperienze concrete, anche nei termini dello straniamento o del sentimento di umiltà che esse generano. Infine, un modo diverso di presentare questo stesso tentativo di articolazione, come cercherò di mostrare, è quello di interrogarsi intorno alla natura femminile o femminista della cura.

In this paper I would like to move some critical considerations and to articulate a line of development in order to reconfigure the understanding of care ethics in the framework of a sentimentalist interpretation (with reference, for instance, to those given by A. Baier and M. Slote), an interpretation which recognises the sentimental and reflective nature of morality and which indicates in the mechanism of sympathy and the faculty of imagination the pillars of the moral sentiment. Furthermore, I will reason in the wake of some recent feminist and post-feminist considerations concerning the difficulty of giving an account of oneself or of the others (see J. Butler), of actually seeing and recognising our own needs or those of the others (or to have a voice to express them), considerations which I find echoed in C. Gilliagan’s recent writings (see Joining the Resistance). In particular, still maintaining a reference to sympathy and imagination, I would like to re-examine the role and work of imagination and indicate the positive role of the awareness of one’s own ability to feel and imagine, that is to say an (even aching) sense of one’s own limits. An element which should not be necessarily thought as the result of an intervention of reason or intellect, but as the result of concrete experiences, even in terms of a feeling of puzzlement or humility. Finally, I will argue that a different way to present this same articulation is to wonder about the feminine or feminist nature of care.
