Abstract

Lo studio ha preso in considerazione il raporto fra storia e letteratura, partendo dagli anni Trenta in cui gli intellettuali brasiliani sentono la necessità di riconsiderare sotto una nuova luce le conquiste estetiche del Modernismo del 1922. La diffusa apprensione dovuta alla fine di una guerra senza precedenti, dalla portata mondiale, e lo spettro di una nuova, che si sarebbe presto rivelata ancora più disastrosa, porta a un pessimismo generale, ma anche a un desiderio di critica sociale e di denuncia del disagiato universo del Nordest. Graciliano Ramos si distinguerà come scrittore che, partendo da una esperienza personale emblematica della dittatura dello Estado Novo di Getúlio Vargas, porterà avanti quest’indagine, al tempo stesso individuale e collettiva, creando un’opera che parla ancora al mondo di oggi.
