Abstract

Il saggio traccia l’identità culturale e artistica di Lina Bo Bardi, una donna architetto formata in Italia in anni politicamente difficili ma molto intensi sul piano del dibattito, che in Brasile, dove prese la cittadinanza pochi anni dopo esservisi stabilita, trovò la terra ideale dove esprimere il suo talento e la sua creatività. Il contrasto tra i due paesi, l’uno imploso sotto il regime fascista e la guerra, l’altro in pieno sviluppo ed euforia espansiva, fu una spinta verso una sintesi originale tra la razionalità umanistica tipicamente italiana e la libertà espressiva brasiliana, che permise a Lina Bo Bardi di approdare ad un'architettura "povera" (ovvero seplice) in cui il Nuovo prende le mosse dai saperi artigianali e popolari. Se si considera questo aspetto dal punto di vista del modernismo brasiliano si può sostenere, con Eduardo Subirats, che Lina Bo Bardi sia stata «[...] uno degli esponenti della riformulazione latinoamericana del progetto globale delle avanguardie storiche europee spazzate via dai regimi totalitari [...]» . Ma prendendo la qyuestione da un’altra angolatura, si può ritenere che la poetica dell'architettura povera esistesse in nuce già al momento della partenza per il Brasile, grazie all'imprinting dell'educazione italiana da cui Lina non si “libererà” mai: la passione per il disegno e l’arte che caratterizzò la sua educazione a Roma; l’attività di illustratrice ed editorialista nelle riviste di Gio Ponti a Milano dopo la laurea; la fondazione con Carlo Pagani e Bruno Zevi della rivista “A” nel primo dopoguerra. Se da una parte la difficile vita in Italia segnò Lina Bo con una depressione che la spinse ad andarsene, dall’altra essa fu, per reazione, il trampolino di lancio verso l’autonomia artistica e lavorativa conquistata una volta divenuta la signora Bardi.

The essay traces the cultural and artistic identity of Lina Bo Bardi, a woman architect trained in Italy in a politically difficult period, who in Brazil, where she took citizenship a few years after establishing herself there, found the ideal country to express her talent and creativity. The contrast between the two countries, one imploded under Fascism and war, the other in full development and expansive euphoria, was a drive towards an original synthesis between the typically Italian humanistic rationality and Brazilian freedom of expression, which allowed Lina Bo Bardi to arrive at a "poor" architecture (or seplice) in which the New takes its starting point from the craftsmanship and popular knowledge. If one considers this aspect from the point of view of Brazilian modernism one can say, with Eduardo Subirats, that Lina Bo Bardi was "[...] one of the exponents of the Latin American reformulation of the global project of the European historical avant-gardes swept away by totalitarian regimes[...]". But taking qyuestione from another angle, it can be considered that the poetics of poor architecture existed in nuce already at the time of departure for Brazil, thanks to the imprinting of Italian education from which Lina will never "free" herself: the passion for drawing and art that characterized his education in Rome; the activity of illustrator and columnist in Gio Ponti's magazines in Milan after graduating; the foundation with Carlo Pagani and Bruno Zevi of the magazine "A" in the post-war period. If on the one hand the difficult life in Italy marked Lina Bo with a depression that drove her to leave, on the other hand it was, by reaction, the springboard to the artistic and working autonomy won once Mrs. Bardi became.
