'" Brand New Ancients' l'epica alla prova del tetro britannico contemporaneo"

Abstract

La reinvenzione dell’epica sulla scena contemporanea britannica passa sia attraverso l’appropriazione del dramma storico shakespeariano, sia tramite una nuova declinazione delle sue possibili espressioni che sulla scena acquistano una qualità proteiforme. Per questo sì può considerare il teatro britannico come un dispositivo di contaminazione dei generi che apre la nozione stessa dell’epica a una pluralità di pratiche di scrittura. In particolare, la presente riflessione prende spunto dall’analisi di due testi del teatro odierno – King Charles III (2014) di Mike Bartlett e Jerusalem (2012) di Jez Butterworth – che, seppur in modi molto diversi, si appropriano di forme e tematiche shakespeariane per riflettere sulla formazione e attualità dell’Englishsness quale epica di una nazione. L’attenzione si concentra quindi sulle possibilità espressive proprie del teatro di narrazione che con forme innovative rispetto alla tradizionale nozione del teatro epico di stampo brechtiano e un’originale ibridazione dei generi – riscontrabili in particolare in Brand New Ancients di Kate Tempest (2013) – riesce a coniugare l’epica secondo tempi e modi del contemporaneo.
