Abstract

The essay examines the presence of public notaries in the Trentino area analytically (and, as far as possible, quantitatively), with special regard on the extra-city context. Ever since the end of the 12th century, both individuals and communities made use of public notaries, who were present in all medium-sized and small (but not very small) villages; sometimes these notaries had an eminent social role, although the available data suggests the existence of a great variety of situations.
