Abstract

Viene pubblicato per la prima volta, in edizione critica e con traduzione italiana, il Compendium, una raccolta di 14 biografie di uomini illustri pensata da Petrarca quale sintesi del De viris illustribus romano e mai portata a compimento: fu infatti Lombardo della Seta che, nel riordinare lo scrittoio del Petrarca dopo la sua morte, provvide a sistemare l’opuscolo e lo mise in circolazione con l’aggiunta di un suo supplemento. A lungo schiacciato sull’opera maggiore e confinato in una dimensione puramente funzionale che ne oscurava la fisionomia, il Compendium è rimasto fino ad oggi sempre ai margini delle ricerche sulla storiografia petrarchesca. Il nuovo testo, frutto di un’esaustiva indagine nella tradizione manoscritta e a stampa, immette dunque sulla scena un nuovo documento finora pressoché sconosciuto, dotato di una sua peculiare identità, che illumina una zona d’ombra dell’ultima produzione del Petrarca e arricchisce di nuove prospettive critiche il quadro del grandioso progetto storiografico dell’umanista. L’edizione è parte del progetto ‘Petrarca del centenario’, curato dalla Commissione per l’edizione nazionale delle opere di Francesco Petrarca.
