Propulsione elettrica su piccoli satelliti per missioni innovative di osservazione della Terra

Abstract

Negli ultimi anni, il crescente interesse per l’osservazione della Terra dallo spazio ha dato nuovo impulso allo studio di opportunità di missione a basso costo. A tal fine, l’uso di micro o mini satelliti, in unione alle elevate prestazioni offerte dai moderni sensori ottici e radar, è particolarmente promettente. Nell’ambito di questo lavoro è stata affrontata la progettazione preliminare di una missione di osservazione della Terra con una costellazione di tre satelliti da circa 300kg ciascuno, lanciati con un singolo lanciatore Vega in orbite circolari a 290 km di quota. Per la compensazione della notevole resistenza atmosferica a tale quota si fa ricorso ad un sistema di propulsione elettrica ad effetto Hall a bassa potenza. L’analisi svolta dimostra che è possibile realizzare missioni a basso costo di questo genere, ottenendo elevata risoluzione al suolo grazie alla bassa quota di volo, a sua volta resa possibile dall’impiego del sistema di propulsione elettrica, con tecnologie attualmente disponibili in Europa.
