Abstract

Conoscere i Lumi, essere introdotti nei salotti alla moda, evitare il carcere, fuggire la dittatura, organizzare dall’estero la resistenza, poter esprimere liberamente le proprie idee, confrontarsi con le avanguardie, respirare l’aria della libertà, incontrare le tracce viventi della Rivoluzione, sperimentare una incredibile mistura di civiltà diverse, scoprire la peccaminosità tipica dell’Europa, tessere strategie politiche, tentare la sorte nel mondo dell’arte, dell’editoria, del teatro o della scrittura. Molte sono le ragioni possibili per recarsi in Francia (qui condensata in Parigi). Ne abbiamo indagate alcune seguendo i personaggi – uomini e donne di epoche diverse e paesi diversi – che hanno compiuto quel passaggio. Per qualcuno si è trattato di una pausa, per altri di una svolta, una trasformazione, un nuovo inizio. Alcuni si sono trattenuti per un periodo più o meno lungo, altri non se ne sono più andati. Conquistati o respinti, affascinati o disgustati, confermati nelle loro aspettative oppure delusi, nessuno ha potuto rimanere indifferente.
