Abstract

Primo Levi aveva tre anni quando Mussolini fu nominato capo del governo dopo la marcia su Roma. Riuscì a iscriversi all'Università prima che le leggi razziali del 1938 impedissero gli studi nelle scuole pubbliche a chi, come lui, veniva discriminato in quanto di «razza ebraica». Nel 1943 riparò in Valle d'Aosta, partecipando alle azioni di una banda partigiana, ma fu catturato e trasferito nel campo di concentramento di Fossoli, da cui poi fu condotto ad Auschwitz. I suoi libri sull'esperienza del Lager sono tradotti e letti in tutto il mondo, ma non sono i soli, come dimostra il fatto che la sua raccolta di racconti Il sistema periodico, appena uscita negli Stati Uniti, fu salutata dal premio Nobel per la letteratura Saul Bellow come un «libro necessario» e «meravigliosamente puro». A ciò si può aggiungere che tutti i suoi libri contengono anticorpi contro la semplificazione della realtà e della storia umana.
