Abstract

Pirandello aveva ventisei anni quando scrisse il suo primo romanzo, ma riuscì a pubblicarlo in un volume autonomo soltanto attorno ai quarant'anni. Era più che cinquantenne quando fu messo in scena il suo dramma rivoluzionario, Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore, con il quale sperimentò la rottura della "quarta parete" immateriale che tradizionalmente separa lo spazio della rappresentazione teatrale da quello riservato agli spettatori. Tra le tappe del suo successo planetario ci sono l'approdo a Hollywood del dramma Come tu mi vuoi, interpretato da Greta Garbo, e il Premio Nobel per la letteratura vinto nel 1934, «per il suo audace e ingegnoso rilancio dell’arte drammatica e scenica». I suoi personaggi ci propongono una nuova percezione di noi stessi e della scena della vita, in cui tutti i drammi e le commedie umane si dipanano, tra forme che emergono e forme che svaniscono, sotto un cielo lacerato che frustra ogni tentativo di abbracciarlo totalmente.
