The article proposes a new understanding of the Tolkovanie Imenam po Alfavitu (Comment to the Names in Alphabetical Order) by Maximus the Greek, which is new as compared to its interpretation as a didactic tool for Greek language learning. The author of the article puts the work in the context of Greek and Latin lists of Hebrew names in the Bible and, using the Synaxarium, relates its contents to the commemorations of saints in the liturgical year. Maximus can thus be seen as creating a hagiographic-onomastic list to support biblical and liturgical exegesis.
