The essay questions the contribution that the evaluation of school can bring to its improvement, both in light of the specific way in which national evaluation system is implemented, both in the light of scientific thinking in the evaluation of education system. The relationship between educational accountability and school choice as well as school improvement are discussed, focusing on pro and con of test-based accountability systems. Costs and benefits of strong school competition are considered, showing the possible impacts in terms of equity and social inclusion.
