Abstract

Si è guardato al trattato "De ratiociniis in ludo aleae" di Huygens come a una teoria del giusto valore di ogni situazione di gioco giustificata razionalmente sulla base della possibilità di attribuire un prezzo equo a giochi particolarmente semplici. Si è indicato come esso non sia un'applicazione del calcolo delle probabilità ai giochi d'azzardo, ma una teoria di giochi aleatori attraverso la quale il linguaggio tecnico probabilistico emerge con naturalezza, sviluppando un proprio elemento essenziale: la formula del valore dell'aspettazione (oggi “speranza matematica”) dedotta attraverso considerazioni di tipo economico. Essa non è uno sviluppo matematico diretto della nozione di probabilità. Solo successivamente (quando Huygens nella corrispondenza con il fratello Lodewijk si occuperà di problemi di mortalità) il valore dell'aspettazione si emanciperà da ogni riferimento al gioco per assumere il significato attuale di valor medio.
