Climate is the set of meteorological conditions that characterize a given region during the year. The climate is a mostly local feature, rarely referred to a regional or national scale. In fact, climate events should be correlated with a suitable spatial scale so as to define the limits of their reasoning. The Abruzzo climate is heavily influenced by the presence of the Apennines-Central mountain range, which clearly divides the climate of the coastal strip and sub-Apennine hills from that of the highest mountain ranges: while the coastal areas have a Mediterranean climate with summers hot and dry, and mild and rainy winters the hillsides have sublitoral climatic characteristics with temperatures that progressively decrease with altitude and rainfall which increase with quota. This chapter describes the main climatic factors and then focuses on the climatic characteristics of the coastline.
