Canudo et le cinéma

Abstract

Ricciotto Canudo est connu comme le missionnaire du « septième art ». Ce poète italien arrivé à Paris au début du XXe siècle, ami d’Apollinaire et animateur de cercles d’avant-garde, découvre vite les potentialités esthétiques du cinéma et, au fil du temps, engage une bataille culturelle pour sa légitimation artistique. Cette bataille s’interrompt brusquement en 1923, avec sa disparition prématurée, mais elle a légué d’importantes conquêtes : grâce à lui, en effet, le cinéma est devenu plus familier au monde intellectuel. Ce résultat est dû à ses talents d’organisateur (il fonde le Club des amis du septième art) aussi bien qu’aux nombreux écrits qu’il a publiés, qui continuent à être lus et qui sont au centre de ce livre. Le cinéma était alors un matériau incandescent, un objet qu’il fallait entièrement penser, et Canudo, pour le théoriser, se fie aux dons de sourcier du poète. Cela ne signifie toutefois pas que ses réflexions soient seulement rhapsodiques. Au contraire, comme ce livre tente de le démontrer, elles sont parcourues de certaines lignes de force, et constellées d’une série de motifs dans lesquels Canudo reconnaissait la force expressive du nouveau médium.
