Abstract

Eine Monade ist eine einfache Substanz, die nicht aus mehreren Teilen besteht. Das Dasein physischer Monaden, d. h. der einzigen, die Kant in seinen Werken ausführlicher thematisiert, verträgt sich mit den Gesetzen der Geometrie und unterliegt den Gesetzen der Physik. Kant folgt in seiner Definition Leibniz, der in der Monadologie von 1714 die Monade als einfache Substanz und Grundlage aller zusammengesetzten Körper definiert hatte. Er unterscheidet sich aber dadurch von Leibniz, dass er den Monaden physikalische Kräfte zuspricht und keine ausführliche metaphysische Theorie der Monaden entwickelt. Die metaphysische Monade hat ihren Grund in sich selbst; die physikalische lässt sich dagegen dadurch charakterisieren, dass sie durch innere Kräfte in einem Verhältnis zu anderen Monaden außer ihr steht. Die Körper bestehen aus Monaden.
