Abstract

Il saggio ricostruisce la figura di John Ruskin con particolare riferimento alla cultura italiana, inquadrando il soggiorno veronese del 1869 (a cui risalgono le lettere pubblicate nel volume, per la prima volta in forma completa) nel periodo storico immediatamente successivo all'annessione del Veneto al Regno d'Italia. Ruskin, uno degli uomini di cultura più influenti dell’Inghilterra vittoriana, fondatore di un nuovo modo di concepire la critica d'arte, dimostrò una particolare predilezione per la città di Verona, che visitò quindici volte tra il 1835 e il 1888, arrivando a definirla «il mio posto più caro in Italia»; più ancora di Venezia, alla quale dedicò una delle sue opere più celebri, Verona gli pareva incarnare «il destino e la bellezza» del nostro Paese. Il libro comprende anche un'antologia di testi dedicati da Ruskin a Verona in varie occasioni, tradotti e commentati dal curatore, e alcuni acquerelli di Ruskin.
