Abstract

A seguito della crisi della formazione classica nel corso dell’Ottocento, nell’area di lingua tedesca di fine secolo la tradizione antica è tornata a essere per molti artisti e studiosi un’esperienza intellettuale e umana viva e arricchente, un interesse che ha posto con rinnovata urgenza la questione della modernità dell’antico e dell’antichità o, meglio, arcaicità del moderno. Un ruolo centrale riveste in questo contesto la trasmissione del teatro antico nella cultura e letteratura della Klassische Moderne. Se il genere della tragedia viene considerato anacronistico verso la fine dell’Ottocento, il tragico è tuttavia presente nel dibattito teorico e culturale dell’epoca che contempla, insieme alla fine della tragedia classica, la sua rinascita in forme diverse. Di particolare rilevanza è in questo contesto non solo la ricezione del teatro in senso tradizionale, bensì il confronto creativo e originale degli scrittori con le fonti classiche, con la tragedia e la mitologia antica, nella forma di rielaborazioni, rifacimenti, riletture e riscritture della tradizione classica.
