Abstract

Dell'Italia, intesa come realtà geografica e storica, ma anche come “Paese dell'anima”, John Ruskin (1819-1900) è stato certamente uno dei più profondi conoscitori e indagatori. I saggi raccolti in questo libro affrontano soprattutto la sua relazione con il Veneto, in una prospettiva interdisciplinare che tiene insieme argomenti come la narrazione di viaggio, la scoperta della pittura di Tintoretto, la discussione sul restauro dei monumenti, aprendosi inoltre al tema, non meno stimolante, dell'influsso esercitato a sua volta da Ruskin sulla cultura italiana (qui, in particolare, su scrittori del Novecento quali Buzzati e Calvino). Il volume trae origine da una giornata di studi svoltasi il 30 novembre 2019 all'Università di Verona nell'ambito delle manifestazioni italiane per il secondo centenario della nascita, che, con il titolo «Memories on John Ruskin» e sotto l'egida di un comitato scientifico internazionale, hanno toccato Lucca e Firenze e si sono concluse, in un'ideale staffetta, nella città che il viaggiatore inglese definiva «my dearest place in Italy». Il volume contiene contributi di Paola Marini, Monica Molteni, Angelo Righetti, Giuseppe Sandrini ed Emma Sdegno.
