Sustainability has become an increasingly important part of the management of real estate investment trusts (REITs) around the world over the last decade, manifest in various aspects including property selection, property management, asset management, fund management, performance measurement and REIT marketing. Despite the increased importance of sustainability to the REIT industry worldwide, surprisingly little academic research has been undertaken into REITs and sustainability. This chapter provides a literature review of published research undertaken to date concerning REITs and sustainability, identifies the themes evident through such published research, draws together the conclusions of such published research and suggests areas for further research.
