(Ej 53).

Abstract

Ignatian imagination, through its many textual forms (“to see”, “the sight of imagination”, “imagining”) in the Exercitia Spiritualia of St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) shows its transformative value (Poetics) in the forma Christi. Here lies its strength as a theological-spiritual exercise beyond its role in the contemplations of the life of Christ (compositio loci). The phenomenological character of ignatian imagination reveals the two main sources that made Ignatius into an imaginative subject: the imaginal or spiritual tradition (s. XII-XVI) and chivalric literature, specially the so-called “Matter of Britain”. These traditions follow the medieval principle of per visibilia ad invisibilia (cf. Rom 1:20) and converge into three main categories: vision, knowledge, and searching. The experience of St. Ignatius is fulfilled in the opening of the eyes (oculus mentis, or cordis, or imaginationis) upon encountering the Christian mystery. This experience nourishes the Spiritual Exercises and activates an hermeneutic process from 1540 to 1599 about understanding the imaginative or imaginary senses.
