Abstract

This article is a short reflection about the narrative universe of Vidas secas and about the character as center of diegesis, whether in literary or film narrative. It addresses the strategies used by Graciliano Ramos to give life to the family of ‘retirantes’ of the Brazilian Northeast, protagonist of romance. In addition, the position assumed by the narrator of the ‘sertanejo’ universe. Regarding literary adaptation, it stands out the uniqueness of Vidas secas by Nelson Pereira dos Santos and the film essence of the novel. Additionally, the social commitment assumed both by the writer and the director of the respective literary and cinematographic productions.

Este artigo é uma breve reflexão sobre o universo narrativo de Vidas secas, tendo a personagem como centro da diégese, seja na narrativa literária ou na fílmica. Aborda as estratégicas utilizadas por Graciliano Ramos para dar vida à família de retirantes do Nordeste brasileiro, protagonista do romance e a posição assumida pela entidade narradora no árido universo sertanejo. Quanto à adaptação literária, destacam-se o que singulariza o Vidas secas de Nelson Pereira dos Santos e a essência cinematográfica do romance para além do compromisso social assumido tanto pelo escritor como o realizador nas respectivas mediações literária e cinematográfica.
