Abstract

This article discusses the experience of adults who, as a result of a difficult early childhood in terms of neglect and/or abuse, are experiencing parenthood with a mixture of pain, regret and opportunity. Through an examination of three temporal lines in parental development (the influence of the parents past; the parents current experience; the opportunities to build paths of growth in the parent-child relationship), the article describes some of the key points that make it possible to understand the ambiguous and painful experience of the wounded parent, and some of the ways to encourage the healing of these wounds.
