El término latino Ordo ha adquirido significados muy diversos a lo largo de la historia y ha experimentado una larga evolución antes de referirse a una familia religiosa. En la vida religiosa la expresión designa a un determinado número de familias religiosas más antiguas que emiten votos solemnes. A lo largo de los siglos las órdenes religiosas han asumido diversas formas con notas propias: monásticas, canonicales, mendicantes, miliitares, clérigos regulares.Las Órdenes se diferencian de una asociación piadosa de fieles o una Tercera Orden porque en éstas no se emiten votos, son sólo privados o no asumen la vida común. Se diferencian de las congregaciones porque en éstas todos sus miembros asumen los consejos mediante votos simples.
The latin term "Ordo" has acquired very different meanings throughout history and has undergone a long evolution before referring to a religious family. In religious life the expression designates a number of older religious families who emit solemn vows. Throughout the centuries the religious orders have assumed diverse forms with own notes: monastic, canonicales, mendicantes, miliitares, regular clerics.Orders are different from a pious association of the faithful or a Third Order because they are not issued votes, are only private or do not assume the common life. They differ from congregations because in these all members take councils by simple votes.
