El primer apostolado del consagrado es el testimonio de su consagración, sea religiosa o secular, como vida dedicada por entero a Dios, antes incluso que las concretas acciones apostólicas.Éstas definen los diversos tipos de institutos religiosos: contemplativos, apostólicos, laicales con actividades y obras de apostolado de diversa naturaleza (predicación, catequesis, sacramentos, medios de comunicación, obras de caridad). El legislador se ha preocupado por dar criterios e instrumentos que guíen toda actividad apostólica: comunión con los obispos, coordinación, colaboración.
