Abstract

With the Motu Proprio Omnium in mentem published in December 2009, Benedict XVI brought in some changes in the Code of Canon Law. The first one refers to the sacrament of order trying to overcome some ambiguities present in the canon 1008 text, adapting the norm to the doctrinal principles already established in the teaching of the Second Vatican Council and after it. That way it defines better the rol of the deacons in relation to the rol of the priests as two different grades of the same sacrament and indirectly it gives light on some dangerous pastoral practices. Only bishops and priests have the capacity to act in the person of Christ as Head, carrying out the ministries of teaching, sanctifying and governing. Deacons do not represent Christ as Head but Christ as Servant. It seems we need a dynamic and common understanding on the ordained ministry in its different grades. This is why we need to look for a greater flexibility in the way we organize and understand deacons ministry in the different church contexts. Taking this into account it is easier to understand the position of some particular churches which have decided to empower and give more relevance to this ordained ministry, a ministry of service in liturgy, preaching of the Gospel and teaching catechism, and charity.
