Türkiye tüketim harcaması esneklik tahminleri, 2003

Abstract

The main objective of this study is the analysis of household consumption pattern in Turkey for 2003. This paper examines the expenditure patterns of general households in Turkey and the 5 level expenditure groups, as well. For 5 different expenditure groups nine functional forms of Engel curves are tried in order to find the most suitable economic equation for the expenditure patterns. For these equations, the explanatory variables are the total expenditures and household size. The most suitable equations are used to estimate the elasticities of total expenditure and household size. In this study, food, alcohol, communication and health expenditures are found as necessity goods. For the other categories in the expenditures, they are seemed as luxury. Moreover, none of the functional forms was appropriate for the housing expenditures. We also try to determine, which goods are applicable to economies of scale via household size. We found that the luxury goods are applicable to economies of scale. On the other hand, the necessity goods are not applicable.
