Abstract

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A GRAVITY DROP HAMMER ÇOLAEO?LU, M.AÜ Faculty of Engineering Mechanical Eng. Department, M. Sc. Thesis Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. R. Orhan YILDIRIM September 1990, öd Pages ABSTRACT This thesis describes the design, construction and calibration of a gravity drop hammer. It was manufactured at the METU Mechanical Engineering Department. Metal forming machines are examined in detail. In the light of this investigation, the gravity drop hammer is found to be the simplest and cheapest device carrying out metal forming processess at low impact speeds. The general design considerations of hammers are given. The constructed gravity drop hammer consists of mainly two guides, a bottom anvil, ram and quick release mechanism. The üimaximum available impact speed of the ram is about 8 m/s. The work-capacity of the hammer is about 300 J for the existing ram. Most of the metal forming operations such as bar cropping, sheet metal operations and upsetting can be performed by using the constructed gravity drop hammer. Key words : HAMMER, DROP HAMMER, GRAVITY DROP HAMMER, IMPACT, IMPACT MACHINES Science Code : 625.02.02 iv
