An Aesthetic search on urban morphology

Abstract

ABSTRACT AN ASTHETIC SEARCH ON URBAN MORPHOLOGY ONARAN, S. Korkut Master in Architecture Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gönül Evyapan January 1990 This study is a search on the aesthetic values and properties of urban morphology. In this study the city is considered as an architectural artifact. Here, in order to reach a coherent system of aesthetic values and to evaluate and criticise the urban environment, a conceptual framework is introduced, and some polar opposites or attitudes which exist in the city are evaluated in reference to the mentioned framework. Then, conceptual definitions related with urban- morphology and classifications of its properties, are introduced in a structured sequence. Finally, an urban design project proposal is presented to direct the discussion towards the aesthetic values and properties mentioned in the study. Key words: Self-sufficiency, vitality, compactness, identification, orientation, admiration, urbanity, occupation, closure, variety. Science code: 601 01 03 in-
