The main topic of this study is determining the role of the Young Ottomans inmentality transformation in the Ottoman Empire from the traditional one to amodern one. Their proposals aim to change three patterns of the Ottoman state andsociety. The relation between state and the individual is the first issue. They tried tocreate an Ottoman citizenry, enhanced with freedom and political rights, from areaya. In the second step they imagined a modern society. Their proposals, whichimply a secular system, aim to secure the people from the yoke of the tradition andsome religious bonds. Nationalism is also important for the abolition of thetraditional stratification of the Ottoman society. As a last point, the individual,himself, is tried to be changed into an active, enthusiastic, this-worldly, and rationalbeing. However what is interesting is that while their main concern had been thesurvival of the Ottoman Empire and the Islamic order, their proposals had thepotential to undermine these very institutions. This study will try to find the traces ofthese contradictions and the beginning of a mental transformation.Keywords: Mentality, Ottoman Ideal, Mental Transformation, Freedom.

Bu çalısmanın ana baslıgı Osmanlı mparatorlugu'ndaki geleneksel zihniyetinmodern zihniyete dönüsümünde Genç Osmanlılar hareketinin oynadıgı rolü tespitetmektir. Bu hareketin önerilerinin amacı Osmanlı'daki üç temel ögeyi degistirmeküzerine kurulmustur. Devlet ile birey arasındaki iliski ilk konudur. Bunlar reayadanhürriyet mevhumu ve siyasi haklarla güçlendirilmis bir birey yaratmayaçalısmıslardır. kinci asamada modern bir toplum hayali kurmuslardır. Laikligi imaeden önerilerinin amacı toplumu önünü tıkayan geleneksel ve bir takım dinibaglardan kurtarmayı hedeflemistir. Milliyetçilik vurguları ise Osmanlı gelenekseltoplum yapılanmasının sonunu hazırlaması açısından önemlidir. Son bir nokta olarakise aktif, bu dünya konusunda istekli ve aklıyla hareket eden bir birey yaratmakonusundaki çabaları sayılabilir. Ancak ilginç olan su ki temel kaygılarının Osmanlıdevletini ve slami düzeni korumak ve yasatmak olmasına ragmen getirdikleriönerilerin tam da bu kurumların altını oyuyor olmasıdır.
