Estimating variance components

Abstract

ABSTRACT ESTIMATING VARIANCE COMPONENTS Yuva, Filiz M.S., Department of Statistics Supervisor : Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bilgehan Güven Co-Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Soner Gönen June 2002, 72 pages In this study six different estimation techniques for variance components in a mixed analysis of variance model are reviewed. They are: The Methods of Henderson, Maximum Likelihood Estimation, Restricted Maximum Likelihood Estimation, Minimum Variance Quadratic Unbiased Estimation. These methods are applied to an unbalanced one-way random effects model to illustrate how to compute the estimates of variance components. The properties of these estimation techniques are presented. Keywords : mixed analysis of variance model, variance components, expectation and variance of quadratic forms, maximum likelihoood estimation, one-way random effects model. iii

VARYANS BİLEŞENLERİNİN TAHMİNİ Yuva, Filiz Yüksek Lisans, İstatistik Bölümü Tez Yöneticisi : Doç. Dr. Bilgehan Güven Ortak Tez Yöneticisi : Prof. Dr. Soner Gönen Haziran 2002, 72 sayfa Bu çalışmada karışık etkili varyans modeli için altı farklı tahmin yöntemi ele alınmıştır. Bunlar; Henderson Yöntemleri, En Çok Olabilirlik Tahmin Yöntemi, Kısıtlı En Çok Olabilirlik Tahmin Yöntemi ve En Küçük Varyanslı, Karesel ve Yansız Tahmin yöntemidir. Varyans bileşenlerinin tahminlerinin hesaplanışını örneklemek için bu yöntemler tek yönlü, dengesiz, rasgele etki modeline uygulanmıştır. Bu tahmin yöntemlerinin özellikleri de verilmiştir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Karışık etkili varyans modeli, varyans bileşeni, karesel formların beklenen değeri ve varyansı, en çok olabilirlik tahmini, tek yönlü rasgele etki modeli. iv
