Effect of high volume natural pozzolan addition on the properties of pozzolanic cements

Abstract

ABSTRACT EFFECTS OF HIGH VOLUME NATURAL POZZOLAN ADDITION ON THE PROPERTIES OF POZZOLANIC CEMENTS UZAL, Burak M.S., Department of Civil Engineering Supervisor: Dr. Lutfullah TURANLI January 2002, 98 pages In recent years, scientific studies are carried out to investigate the physical- mechanical properties and durability characteristics of blended cements containing high volumes of fly ash (more than 50%). This type of blended cement has shown good mechanical properties and durability characteristics. Furthermore, the use of pozzolanic materials as addition in large proportions for cement production provides important environmental advantages such as low CO2 released into atmosphere during the clinker production. In this study, experimental work was carried out for the purpose of finding out the effect of high amount of natural pozzolan addition (55%) on the properties of pozzolanic cements. For this purpose, twelve types of blended cements with or without superplasticizer were produced with different grinding times in the laboratory by using one type of portland cement clinker and two natural pozzolans from different sources. The six types of the blended cements were produced as iiisuperplasticized by intergrinding the superplasticizer in a dry powder form together with clinker, natural pozzolans, and gypsum. Two types of portland cements were also produced with any addition of natural pozzolan but with different fineness values. In addition to blended cements obtained by intergrinding, four types of blended cements were also obtained by mixing the portland cement and ground natural pozzolans for comparison with intergrinding and separate grinding. Furthermore, it is investigated that the effect of the grinding on the fineness, water requirement and strength activity index of natural pozzolans. Generally speaking, the performance of the blended cements containing 55 percent natural pozzolans and portland cements were compared in terms of the physical and mechanical properties such as fineness and particle size distribution for a given grinding time, normal consistency, setting times, autoclave expansion and compressive strength of mortars. Also as a durability parameter, effectiveness of the blended cements in reducing the expansions due to alkali-silica reaction was evaluated by an accelerated test method. High volume pozzolan addition reduced the compressive strength of mortars significantly with respect to portland cements at early ages, however at 91 days of age the reduction in strength was very low. Furthermore the blended cements containing 55 percent natural pozzolan showed a superior durability characteristic in terms of the alkali-silica reaction. oz YÜKSEK HACİMDE DOĞAL PUZOLAN İLAVESİNİN PUZOLANİK ÇİMENTOLARIN ÖZELLİKLERİNE ETKİSİ UZAL, Burak Yüksek Lisans Tezi, İnşaat Müh.
