Initial alignment techniques for strapdown intertial navigation systems

Abstract

FOR STRAPDOWN 1NERTIAL NAVIGATION SYSTEMS İNCİ, Taner M.S., Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kemal LEBLEBİCİOĞLU Co-Supervisor: Dr. Murat EREN January 1997, 79 pages In this thesis, techniques used in initial alignment of a strapdown navigation system are explained. An error propagation analysis is performed first to indicate the necessity of initialization for inertial navigation systems. A self alignment technique based on the Kalman filter is developed and implemented in Matlab- Simulink software environment to estimate the misalignment angles in strapdown inertial navigation systems. It is shown that unless high grade sensors are used the self aiming of strapdown inertial navigators is not possible. In such cases other techniques of initial alignment, such as optical or mechanical, are used. An optical alignment technique is also explained for this reason. Keywords : Initial Alignment, Kalman Filter, Strapdown Inertial Navigation Systems, Optic Alignment m
