Voltage collapse in power systems

Abstract

ABSTRACT VOLTAGE COLLAPSE IN POWER SYSTEM BÜYÜKCENGİZ, Sami M.S., Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Supervisor : Prof. Df. Arif ERTAŞ Co-Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Osman SEVAİO?LU September 1996, 61 pages In this thesis work, one type of power system instabilities which is called voltage collapse is introduced. After a general introduction of power system voltage stability and security assessment, description and evolution of voltage collapse are explained. Problems leading to voltage collapse, different scientific approaches and discussions on the nature of such an instability phenomenon are examined. mBifurcation theory is concerned with the branching of a nonlinear power system model when such a system undergoes to a qualitative change as parameters vary. To determine the interactions among dynamic mechanisms, a voltage collapse scenario based on the bifurcation theory is introduced using a simple power system model. In order to illustrate some of the basic aspects of operation of an interconnected high voltage power system in case of steady increase of load power, a package program called PowerWorld is used. The formation of voltage collapse is tried to be observed by means of this program. Defense against voltage collapse starts at the planning stage. Therefore; by considering the economical, environmental constraints and future load growth factors, rules adopted at the planning stage will insure the system against such an undesirable voltage collapse. Keywords : Voltage Stability, Voltage Collapse, Bifurcation Theory IV
