Word Frequency List of Turkish Books on Wattpad

Abstract

The ratio of the number of readers of printed literary books to the population is gradually decreasing. One of the most important reasons is the continued increase of the time spent by young generations in the virtual environment using technological devices. Based on this interest of young people, digital platforms in new media equipped with literacy opportunities that will bring them together attract attention. In this study, the most frequently used words in Turkish books and the frequency of these words are emphasized on the Wattpad digital literacy platform, which has a significant user community in our country and where some works published on this digital platform are printed. The books examined in this study were selected by choosing Turkish among the language options on the home page of a newly generated 13-year-old profile on the Wattpad platform at 12:00 on 06.12.2021. By scanning all the books in this category, the first 10 books with the highest number of reads were determined and the texts of all the books were preprocessed and arranged. The membership date, gender and reading rates of the authors of these selected books were also revealed and the first 100 words used in these books, the frequencies of these 100 words and the total word ratio of these words in 10 books were determined. In addition, the first 50 words and their frequencies identified in this study were compared with the first 50 words found in Yazılı Türkçenin Kelime Sıklığı Sözlüğü and ve Çağdaş Türkçenin Sıklık Sözlüğü. It was concluded that although there were different periods and corpus, the first 50 words used in the written language and their usage frequency did not indicate a significant change.
