Abstract

INVESTIGATION OF MUSCLE STRENGTH LOSS IN STROKE INDIVIDUALSDENGİZ, Aziz2018 january, 50 pagesM. Sc. Thesis in Physical Therapy and RehabilitationSupervisor: Asist. Prof. EMRE BASKAN, PT, PhDThe aim of this study is to investigate the muscle strength Loss and unaffectedside's extremity muscle strength in the stroke individuals. Thirty-three subjects (22males, 11 females) with average age of 56.33 ± 8.92 and 33 (20 males, 13 females)healthy control groups with average age of 52.3 ± 8.52 were included in the study.Participants' muscle strengths were measured by a power track hand helddynamometer, and grip strengths were measured by a hand dynamometer.Measurements were applied to both the upper and lower extremities and trunk musclesin the healthy group, and to the upper and lower extremities in the unaffected side andtrunk muscles in the stroke group. The total muscle strength of the individuals wascalculated by summing the lower and upper extremities and trunk muscle strengths. Inthe analyze of unaffected side muscle strength, 27 participants who were dominant andnot affected on the right side and 33 healthy participants dominant on the right sidewere compared. The total muscle strength of stroke subjects was 49909.5 N, the totalmuscle strength of healthy subjects was 182375 N, the difference between this groupswas measured as 132465.5 N. The loss of total muscle strength in stroke patients wasmeasured as 72.63%. A significant difference was found in favor of healthy subjects inthe unaffected side extremity comparison (p = 0.0001). According to the results of thisstudy, muscle strength in stroke patients is reduced on the unaffected side, and it isimportant to develop muscle strength both in the affected and unaffected side in strokerehabilitation. Keywords: Stroke, Muscle Strength, Unaffected extremity
