Abstract

As it is in the most of the courses, one of the main goals of Turkish language course, is to improve students’ reading skills so that they can understand and comprehend efficiently, interpret, question, analyze and evaluate what they have read as well as synthesize. The aim of this study is to find out the effects of reading circle method on the reading comprehension achievement of the 5th graders. Adopted a control group pre-test and post-test design, the study was conducted in a state school in İzmir, in which 32 5th graders participated as in experimental (n=16) and control groups (n=16). In order to determine the students’ reading comprehension achievement, the participants were pretested at the beginning of a 6 week period of time and they were postested at the end of the period by using the achievement test developed by the researcher. Apart from it, a focus group interview was administered to 6 students. Additionally, reflective notes on the basis of observations and documents from the students during the implementations were used. The data analyses of the tests were carried out by using SPSS. Based on the anaylses, it is concluded that the experimental and the control group are not significantly different. However, the students’ reading comprehension achievement results in the experimental group have increased compared to the control groups’. The students enjoyed the reading circle method quite a lot, and they stated that they learned better when they were engaged and active. Consequently, the suggestions for the further researches as well as the practices were provided in the study.
