Ermeni meselesi bağlamında Süleyman Nazif

Abstract

Süleyman Nazif, one of the intellectuals and statesmen in the late period of Ottoman State, showed awareness to important social events such as Armenian Question and struggled for it actively. Nazif, who belongs to one of the prestigious families of Diyarbekir, was charged in The Commission of Inquiry, which was formed in order to investigate Armenian Events occurring in Diyarbekir 1895. In that period, he fought against the idea of founding an Armenian State in Six Provinces (Vilâyât-ı Sitte) in which Diyarbekir is with his “pen” through his writings and remarks. During warfare, with his writings on “Hadisat” where he worked as an editorial writer, he joined the arguments on forced migration. He stated that Ottoman State hadn’t committed genocide on Armenians and the migration had stemmed from a “must”. This necessity was put into practice as well as possible. The attitudes of those who misconduct in this period should not be attributed to the Ottoman State and emphasized that this situation was an individual initiative.
