An empirical research on the relationship between employees’ political skill and impression management

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this study was to assess the relationships between political skill of employees and their impression management strategies. The sample comprised 250 employees from banking sector. A convenience sampling technique was used to determine the sample. The data were collected through questionnaire technique. The questionnaires were delivered between 15th and 30th of December 2020 and collected on the same day. The data were analyzed through linear regression analyses. Findings indicated that there were positive and significant relationships between networking ability and ingratiation, exemplification, intimidation, and supplication, between interpersonal influence and self-promotion, ingratiation, intimidation, and supplication, between social astuteness and self-promotion, exemplification, intimidation, and supplication, and between apparent sincerity and self-promotion, exemplification, intimidation and supplication. Findings may help improve managerial processes especially in terms of selecting the right person to an organization. Also, findings can help understand the theories on the outcomes of political skill of employees and antecedents of impression management strategies. Key words: Political skill, Impression management, Organizations, Regression analysis Öz Bu çalışmanın amacı çalışanların politik becerileri ile izlenim yönetimi stratejileri arasındaki ilişkileri ortaya çıkartmaktır. Araştırmanın evrenini bankacılık sektöründe çalışan 250 katılımcı oluşturmaktadır. Örneklem kolayda örnekleme yöntemine uygun olarak oluşturulmuştur. Araştırmanın verisi anket tekniği ile toplanmıştır. Anket formları katılımcılara 15 ve 30 Aralık 2020 tarihleri arasında dağıtılmış ve aynı gün toplanmıştır. Araştırmanın verisi doğrusal regresyon analizleri ile incelenmiştir. Elde edilen bulgulara göre ilişki ağı kurabilme becerisi ile kendini sevdirme, örnek davranışlar sergileme, tehdit etme ve kendini acındırma arasında, kişilerarası etki ile niteliklerini tanıtma, kendini sevdirme, tehdit etme ve kendini acındırma arasında, sosyal zekâ ile niteliklerini tanıtma, örnek davranışlar sergileme, tehdit etme ve kendini acındırma arasında ve samimi görünme ile niteliklerini tanıtma, örnek davranışlar sergileme, tehdit etme ve kendin acındırma arasında aynı yönlü ve anlamlı ilişkiler vardır. Bulgular, özellikle bir kuruma doğru kişinin seçilmesi açısından yönetsel süreçlerin iyileştirilmesine yardımcı olabilir. Bulgular ayrıca, çalışanların politik becerilerinin sonuçları ve izlenim yönetimi stratejilerinin öncülleri hakkındaki teorilerin anlaşılmasına yardımcı olabilir.
