Investigation of co-pyrolysis of Turkish lignite and oil shale with polypropylene by using different methods and chracterization of co-pyrolysis products

Abstract

vn ABSTRACT INVESTIGATION OF CO-PYROLYSIS OF TURKISH LIGNITE AND OIL SHALE WITH POLYPROPYLENE BY USING DIFFERENT METHODS AND CHARACTERISATION OF CO-PYROLYSİS PRODUCTS ERDO?AN, Cem MSc in Chemical Engineering Supervisors: Prof Dr. Mehmet Sağlam Assoc. Dr. Levent Ballice July 2002, 236 sayfa In this thesis the co-pyrolysis of GOS with PP and lignite with PP were investigated by using 2 different methods. The purpose of this study was to determine the maximum product evolution temperature, to characterise the co-pyrolysis products by carbon number, to investigate the existence of synergistic effect and to determine the effect of the factors influencing the pyrolysis product such as residence time, temperature, reactor geometry and heating rate. In this regard, temperature-programmed and fast pyrolysis of GOS, lignite,PP and blend of GOS:PP on 1:3 total carbon ratio basis and also lignite:PP on 1:3 total carbon ratio basis were investigated. Pyrolysis products were analysed by capillary gas chromatography and total product evolution rate was investigated as a function of temperature and time. Volatile fraction of pyrolysis products was classified according to carbon number. The effect of co-pyrolysis of GOS with PP and lignite with PP were determined by calculating the difference between experimental and hypothetical mean value of conversion of total organic carbon into volatile products in both methods. Keywords: GOS, lignite, PP, pyrolysis, synergism, co-pyrolysis, temperature-programmed pyrolysis, fast pyrolysis, aliphatic hydrocarbons
