Abstract

V.I.I. SUMMARY In our research poisoning cases reported to the Emergency Clinic at the Medical School Hospital of Ege University between 1 January 1990 - 31 December 1992 have been studied. During this 3 year period 2214 cases were reported. It has been found out that 99.23 % of the cases were acute, whereas 0.77 % were chronic. Poisoning ratio in women were higher and W/M ratio was 1.4/1. It has been observed that poisonings were higher in age groups of 11-20 and 0-10. In the 0-10 age group accidental poisonings were found to be at a high level, the cause of which was household products; whereas in other age groups poisoning by drugs was the primary cause. In these cases the ratio of accidental poisonings were 49.59 %, the ratio of suicidal case poisonings were 43.45 %. It has been observed that suicidal poisonings were seen mostly in women of age groups of 1 1-20 and 21-30. Accidental poisonings were at a higher ratio in men (63.91 %). It has been noted that the principle agents that lead to poisonings were drugs (40.06 %), household products (14.50 %), and food (13.87 %) respectively; in drugs poisonings by psychotropics and analgesics held the highest ratio. In our research, out of the 2214 patients reported, 70.73 % was discharged from the hospital, 28.59 % was sent to other clinics for further studies and treatment and 8 patients lost their lives (0.36 %).99 In evaluating the data we have reached the conclusion that in order to prevent poisoning, to reduce the morbidity and mortality ratios, and to prevent unnecessary admissions to the hospitals; training of the public, safe packaging of poisonous agents, control of sales for such goods, establishing Poison Information and Control Center in our region should be given great importance.

VI.
